Medicaid yet to award MCO contracts
Dr. Carol Buffington, WVDA representative to WV Medicaid, and Executive Director
Richard Stevens attended Medicaid’s Medical Services Fund Advisory Council
this afternoon. The Council is made up of DHHR officials and representatives of
all classes of health care services provided Medicaid beneficiaries.
Medicaid officials advised Dr. Buffington and Mr. Stevens that it had NOT awarded
any contracts to any managed care organizations, after Stevens informed officials
that one third party (MCNA Dental) was telling dental offices that is would be a
dental provider for the Medicaid program effective July 1, 2016.
Officials said MCO contracts would be awarded later this month. The only third
party payers (MCOs) currently under contract are The Health Plan, Unicare, WV
Family Health, Coventry and Molina. Medicaid was directed by a Kanawha
County Circuit Judge to bid the contracts out because the agency did not bid the
contracts with its current MCOs as required by state law.
Stevens has expressed concern to Medicaid officials with adding additional
contractors because of problems dental offices now have identifying which MCO
covers their patients.
